in reply to: Computer testing for CFA Level 1 #85508in reply to: So….should I already have started for Dec exams? #85370::
I can provide a data-based answer, although ultimately it’s up to your preference and circumstance.
Generally we recommend that people start THE LATEST by the second registration deadline, i.e. mid-August.
For June exams there is a very clear start point for most candidates – January.
For December exams there is a more gradual start – some start in June, with the most starting in September (which as mentioned we think is too late).
I personally would recommend starting now, assuming you have a regular full-time job, are reasonably disciplined for study and can form a study plan (you can get one here).
You can see the data and charts here: https://www.300hours.com/heres-when-you-should-start-your-cfa-exam-studies/#.XS7ZxbLTW-o
::Hi @Eli, I’ve re-emailed you your study planner. If you still have any issues please email me directly – christine@300hours.com
in reply to: Bring back the Kaplan Schweser study calendar #85039::Hi @istudy – I realise it’s not the same thing, but we offer a free study calendar / planner that you can use organise your CFA studies. You can generate one here: https://300hours.com/cfa-study-planner/#.XCSVg8_7S88
in reply to: Practice exams! Who wants practice exams? #84944::Hi @surangasa, congrats on finishing the CFA program! Sorry to hear you’re having issues managing our emails. You should never be receiving daily emails. I checked the email database and your settings are set to receive our articles as they are published. As we publish twice weekly, that’s probably why you receive lots of emails from us. I’ve set it for you to receive a digest every week, so you should see a drop in emails now.
Hope that works – please let me know if you have any issues. Congrats again!
::Hi @pm_gupta, thanks for letting us know! I’ve just checked the backend and you’ve generated three planners successfully, which should have been emailed to your specified email address. Here’s a few things you can try:
- Do check your spam folders in case it got sent there
- Try an alternative email address
If all else fails, just email us at studyplanner@300hours.com and we’ll get you sorted.
::@mincemeat23 there isn’t a tutoring service, but you do get your curriculum books delivered earlier, and you’d have mentally committed earlier, which in our research has positively correlated with exam performance. Good luck with the exam!
in reply to: How to Use Coffee Effectively for Your CFA Studies #84383::Hi @Corty_O – thanks for writing in!
My honest opinion on your situation is that the CFA Level I will help your job search, but only marginally. Your main challenge is that you’re attempting to switch from a vastly different industry (education) to finance.
For anyone looking to make a switch, I would try and imagine a career path to finance from where you are now. In your case, perhaps something like this:
- Teacher with CFA Level I…
- …CFA Level 1/2/3 qualified instructor…
- …Finance lecturer at university…
- …hired as thought leadership director at bank / advisory
If that sounds long – unfortunately it is, if you’re looking to move as an experienced hire. Alternatively, you can also start at an entry-level position in finance, so depending on how senior you are in the teaching field, it may put you off. Adding relevant financial skills and experience to your CV will help, but as always you’ll need to make the decision on whether the effort is worth the result.
in reply to: Which order should I study the topics? #84349::jabiller said:To piggy back on Daragao’s request, can anyone tell me what is the best way to utilize this forum? What should I be looking for to help with exam prep as I am new to this site too. Thank you very much for any input.Hi @jabiller – welcome to the forum! Any CFA or career related questions are welcome. The clearer your question and the more information you include, the more likely you’ll receive a great and helpful response. However please refrain from sharing any copyrighted material. Thanks!
in reply to: What will you do with the CFA? #84226::Hi @tmccar1, weekends should take care of at least one practice exam, with another throughout the work week. This is revision time so you can solely focus on practice exams and revising.
If time is a problem, there are a few faster ways to make sure you ‘complete’ practice exams. We go through our recommended methods here: http://www.300hours.com/finish-mock-exams-fast-by-cfa-exam-day/#.WKVu1xKLRYc
Good luck! Let us know if you have more questions.
::Agree with @rsparks. It’s better to try for June if you can make it, as you’ll get December as a fallback if June doesn’t work out. But to make June work you need to make sure you can dedicate time to really finish the curriculum and get practice exams done. Usually (well-prepared) candidates start their preparations at the start of January, so you’ll need to start right now and do some catching up.
in reply to: Dec 2016 exam results awaited #84169::It’s definitely not normal for it to take so long. CFA Institute had a significant delay (approx three hours) which we’ve never seen before. They’ve only just published the pass rate and emails are now being sent out. They can take a while, and given the delay that we’ve already experienced, all bets are off on how long your results email will actually take.
Not only that, they have also changed the results format – the email you receive today only tells you a pass or fail result. In the past, the email also included:
- a categorical score on your exam topics – one of 3 categories: 0-50%, 51-70%, 71% and above
- in the case of a Fail, an additional Band 1-10 score (10 indicating the closest to a Pass grade)
CFA Institute does say that ‘detailed’ exam scores will be published online the following day. We’ll know then if the ‘additional details’ are the same as past years.
***It would be very helpful to us (and only if you don’t mind, of course) if you could share the additional exam details with us when you get access to them online. If you’re happy to help, just send a screenshot or a copy/paste to christine@300hours.com. Thanks!***

in reply to: Ethics in L2 #84028in reply to: Access Scholarship #84017::Seems so. The implementation of this scholarship could be better, but conceptually you can see their reasoning:
“The CFA Program Access Scholarship is a needs-based opportunity for those unable to afford the full price of the enrollment and registration fees.“
So theoretically, if you were applying for the scholarship, you’re unlikely to be able to register for the CFA exams if you didn’t get the scholarship, so the risk of an additional $130 would be moot.
On the other hand, if CFA Institute credited the full difference (i.e. $280), they create a loophole where anyone who missed the Early Registration deadline could simply apply for the scholarship, get rejected, and get a credit back to effectively reduce their $930 fee to $650 again.
