@mission you can probably post your resume in a forum where the community is career focused or in a related field (ie. finance?) Just make sure personal info/titles are generalized (ie. John Smith) and just having a few ppl give you objective feedback (since they’re doing it completely voluntarily vs a coach could have a bit of a conflicted interest) can already help set yourself apart from people who didn’t bother with this step
Related to mock exams.. I’d say just realizing how taxing 6 hours of exam writing could be. Never really faced that same requirement during school (occasionally 2 finals on the same day but could be <6 hours combined or a bigger break in between), and for those working full-time, it may have been awhile since you've written an exam of similar length or mental stress
Probably not the most efficient in terms of understanding/memorization.. but I’d use a dual monitor set up… Schweser on one, Word doc the other, type out LOS (the purpose of that reading, given to you), things i think are important for understanding, and i just snip/screenshot any excessively hard to type out formula… after going through the material the first time, i’ll rely more on my notes for review and refer back to institute/Schweser if its sth I had missed or sth I hadn’t noted clearly to myself (personally I feel like looking back at institute text is pretty daunting if you’re doing that for every question you get wrong, whereas my own notes feel a little bit more user-friendly)
@wm247 don’t think that’s nuts.. but going the other way would seem pretty cray (CFA to Masters/PhD physics). If you have that interest in finance/business, you’ll pick up the jargon pretty quickly and find motivation in reading the material (that the average person would find dry and dreadful), good luck
@Sh90 i don’t think memorizing directly from the textbook is an applicable piece of advice for the typical candidate…I’d go with notes + practice questions if possible… if you’re stressed for time near the end then the last few SS you can bail on the practice q’s, but pay more attention to those topics when you’re purely doing questions/mocks
Hmm not sure how you’re “behind the curve” as you have some background in finance and there’s still 5 months till the Dec exam. The material isn’t super complex for L1 but the breadth is quite wide. While you would know your own studying style best, I would recommend notes (not highlighting) the 1st time through, then maybe compact notes of your notes or flash cards when you do your first review (the assumption here is during your first detailed read through, by the time you reach SS18, you’ll have forgotten chunks of the earlier sections), then after that just do practice questions/mocks. The goal is to hit 70% (around 170/240 questions), so it’s completely insignificant if they throw a question out of left field that you draw a complete blank on. Only other thing I’d point out is maybe the length of the exam? It’s a 6 hour exam (2 3-hour sessions) so I made sure i tried my best to simulate that experience while doing mocks (ie. write in the morning, take a lunch break, write again). Best of luck
Hi everyone, I’ve been more of a reader of the blog posts when I was studying for L1 in Dec 2013 and now browsing the forums as I await L2 results from this June. A quick background of myself, I studied accounting in school and currently work in audit. However, I primarily deal with financial institutions/investment-centric companies so gaining the finance knowledge definitely helps.
